This run starts from the Windy Hill Portola Road entrance (012). Get here early as this lot is a favorite among the monster truck moms. There a few different routes out at Windy you can take that all make for a potent little trek. If your fitness level is below par, Razorback may leave you feeling slightly defeated. It is by far the most difficult circuit of them all in this preserve.
For a different slant on this great circuit, be sure to check out Razorback-up. It's an ideal go-between.
Just past the bathrooms is the main trail that will bring me out to Alpine Road. On the way is the Spring Ridge Trail junction (002) which I pass. After crossing the bridge I come to Alpine Road (003), head right and follow it until I come to the trailhead for Razorback Ridge (004). It lies just past the private residence on the right. Here I find some turbulent paths pointing skyward that absolutely smoke my ass! This is one time where the sound of a car cutting along Skyline Blvd. is a welcome ado.
At the next intersection (005) I go right to get on Lost. Here is where things start to mellow some. Flat trails with some dense tree cover and great views of the valley floor below. Along this path I cross over the gravel fire road (006) and join up with the Hamms Gulch trailhead (007). I pass it up and stay on Lost Trail, keeping an eye out for rattlers as sun bathing is a favorite pastime of theirs.
Skyline's main entrance (008) offers a spot for a break. I like to cross the street to get a glimpse of the rolling hills that extend out to the coast. Back to the run, Anniversary Trail takes me right to the top of Windy Hill (009). This is the highest point of the run and provides a great 360º view of the peninsula. (010) marks the beginning of Spring Ridge, a long and relaxing downhill track. For a new twist I started using the Bestsy Crowder trail (011) to get back to the parking lot.
