This 1,612-acre Open Space Preserve offers a remarkably varied landscape that includes ridgetop vistas, expansive meadows, a pond for nature study, and a quiet lake frequented by migrating birds.
Ten miles of trails are available for your exploration. Two one-mile trails are accessible to wheelchairs and baby strollers: one encircling Alpine Pond and another hugging the shores of Horseshoe Lake. Several picnic tables overlook Horseshoe Lake. The preserve also contains a three-mile section of the Bay Area Ridge Trail. Views of the Lambert Creek watershed, Butano Ridge, and Portola State Park will impress the hiker who makes this trek.
The David C. Daniels Nature Center at Alpine Pond is being developed as an educational learning center. Docent-led activities are currently offered at the center. Call the District office, 650-691-1200, for a schedule of events.
The nature center was funded in part by Peninsula Open Space Trust, a local nonprofit land trust. Development of the preserve was assisted by funding from the California Park and Recreation Facilities Act of 1984 and the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund.
Directions:
The preserve's entrance is located about one mile south of the intersection of Skyline Boulevard (Route 35) and Alpine Road. Equestrian parking is also available here. For convenient access to the nature center, park in the Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve parking lot, located at the corner of Alpine Road and Skyline Boulevard, and walk through the tunnel to the preserve.
